The War for World Class Talent

Heidrick & Struggles Partner Emeritus Bill Matthews shares his best advice for recruiting world class talent

Austin, Texas – May 12, 2016 – We are excited to announce the release of the next video in our Advice from the TOP series. The video features Heidrick & Struggles Partner Emeritus Bill Matthews as he shares advice for recruiting world class talent in the medical device industry.

In the video Matthews explains that while there are plenty of executives in the medical device industry, finding – and recruiting – those that are truly world class is a much bigger challenge. “It is really a war for world class talent, and I think it’s critically important to be able to articulate a vision for the business that you’re recruiting someone into that has a clear strategy as to what its exit will be or how it will grow as a stand alone entity. [You need] to be able to persuade people that everyone is on board with what that vision is, that there’s good financing in place to achieve what you’re looking for, and to be decisive as to what you’re looking for and how quickly you can make a decision.”

What are Matthews’ key take aways? “Do your homework, look broadly in the marketplace, and recruit people that are leaders, not just position players.”

Bill Matthews is a Partner Emeritus with Heidrick & Struggles, and is based in the firm’s Atlanta office. He is a member of the Life Sciences Practice focusing on devices, diagnostics, distribution, IT, and healthcare services. He also serves as a member of the Chief Human Resources Officers Practice. Bill previously served as managing partner of the firm’s Atlanta and Miami offices. Prior to joining Heidrick & Struggles in 1996, Bill was a partner and director of another executive search firm, and had been with that firm for more than ten years. He previously served as a contract consultant for Mitsubishi International Corporation, and was the vice president of sales & marketing for a start-up environmental equipment and precious metals refiner.
